Description
The The Tank Tour poster
The Tank Tour was issued in June 1918 by the Scottish War Savings Committee in Edinburgh and printed by McLagan & Cumming. A First World War British tank crosses barbed wire with its guns firing, while kilted soldiers stand in silhouette on the horizon. The blank scroll at the top was left so each town could print its own tour dates.
The poster advertised one of the most popular fundraisers of the war. From late 1917, real tanks back from the front toured British towns as mobile “tank banks”. People queued to buy National War Bonds from £5 to £5,000, or War Savings Certificates at 15 shillings and 6 pence, from a cashier inside the tank. The tank Julian toured Scotland, and Edinburgh alone raised more than £4.7 million in its tank week in January 1918.
This is a British poster, part of our Allied collection, made the year after the United States entered the war.
