Description
The That Liberty Shall Not Perish poster
“That Liberty Shall Not Perish from the Earth – Buy Liberty Bonds” is Joseph Pennell’s 1918 poster for the Fourth Liberty Loan. It imagines the unthinkable: New York under enemy attack, the Statue of Liberty headless and broken, the city burning behind her, bombers overhead and submarines in the harbor. The title borrows the closing words of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
It is one of the most dramatic and best-known American posters of the First World War, and a striking piece of New York and American history for any wall.
