Description
The Weapons for Liberty poster
“U.S.A. Bonds – Weapons for Liberty” was painted by J. C. Leyendecker for the Boy Scouts of America’s part in the Third Liberty Loan of spring 1918. A kneeling Scout offers a broadsword inscribed with the Scout motto, Be Prepared, to a towering figure of Liberty in a spiked crown and star-spangled cloak, carrying a shield bearing the Great Seal of the United States. It was printed by the American Lithographic Co. of New York.
Leyendecker (1874 to 1951) was one of the most celebrated American illustrators of his day, and this is one of the best-known posters of the First World War. Its warm gold, rust and blue tones suit a study, library or collection wall.
