Description
The Join Army Navy Marines poster
Some of the most effective recruiting posters of the First World War used no soldier at all. Join Army Navy Marines is one of them: a single large American flag, with the 48 stars of the time, flies from a tall staff against a pale blue sky, its cords streaming past four lines of heavy black lettering. A red border and a navy rule frame the whole design.
The poster asked for men for all three services at once, and was issued around 1917, when the United States entered the war. The Library of Congress holds a copy in its World War I poster collection. The artist is not recorded.
