Description
The Rivets are Bayonets poster
“Rivets are Bayonets, Drive them home!” is a 1918 World War I poster by American illustrator John E. Sheridan, issued by the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation to the men building America’s wartime merchant fleet. A shipyard riveter crouches over his pneumatic rivet gun, and behind him, in the same pose, the silhouette of a soldier charges with his bayonet against red and white flag stripes and a blazing yellow sky. Every rivet driven at home was a bayonet thrust at the front.
With its bold flat colour and strong graphic design, it is one of the most striking American industrial posters of the war and a fine piece of shipbuilding history for a workshop, office, garage or den.
