Description
The Follow the Flag poster
Follow the Flag, Enlist in the Navy was painted by James Daugherty in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, and printed by the Carey Print Lithograph Company of New York. A sailor in blue dungarees and a white cap strides up from the shore, a flag on a tall staff in one hand and the other reaching back as if to call the next man on. Behind him a grey battleship steams on a bright sea. Below, in bold capitals: Enlist in the Navy.
The poster was printed with space at the foot for a local address, so recruiting stations across the country could use the same design. This copy carries the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station at 322 2nd Avenue East, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; others named stations in Boston, St. Louis and elsewhere.
Daugherty (1889 to 1974) was an early American modernist painter and muralist who later won the Newbery Medal for his children’s book Daniel Boone.

Restored edition
Restored from an original 1917 print: the paper and colours cleaned, and creases, stains and wear removed, with the lettering, the Cedar Rapids address and Daugherty’s signature kept. We don’t have a usable scan of the print before restoration, so there is no before and after slider.
