Description
The To Arms poster
Enlist in the Navy, To Arms was drawn by Milton Bancroft in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War. A young sailor in a white cap and jumper raises a bugle to his lips, its long tasselled cord swinging from his hand, while a battleship steams through dark water behind him. The drawing is in black and white, set in a bold red and gold frame with the lettering Enlist in the Navy above and To Arms below.
Copies are held by the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Bancroft (1867 to 1947) was an Impressionist painter and muralist, trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in Paris, who made posters for the Navy and the Red Cross during the war.
