Description

The Save Rubber, Check Your Tires Now poster

Save Rubber, Check Your Tires Now was painted by Walter Richards in 1942 for the Division of Information of the Office for Emergency Management and printed by the Government Printing Office. A jeep full of helmeted soldiers, rifles up, leaps a desert ridge with all four wheels off the ground, under the line They’ve got more important places to go than you!

The poster belongs to the first months of the war, when Japan’s capture of Malaya and the Dutch East Indies cut off more than nine-tenths of America’s natural rubber. Tyres were the first thing rationed, on 27 December 1941, and the government spent 1942 begging drivers to check pressures, swap wheels, slow down and hand in scrap, so that every pound of rubber could go to vehicles like the jeep in the picture.

Walter DuBois Richards (1907–2006) trained at the Cleveland School of Art, became a leading New York advertising and magazine illustrator, and later designed thirty-seven U.S. postage stamps. The original poster measures 40 × 28 inches.
