Description
The Give Us Lumber for More PT’s poster
Give Us Lumber for More PT’s was issued by the U.S. Army in 1943, and the Army seal sits in the bottom left corner. A Navy PT boat, number 34, races straight at the viewer through green seas with its searchlight cutting the night, while an enemy warship explodes behind it in a wall of orange flame. It was a poster for the lumber industry, not for recruiting. PT boats were built mainly of wood, and the Army and Navy needed far more timber than the mills were producing, so posters like this one were sent to logging camps and sawmills to keep output up.
The boat in the painting was real. PT-34 was an Elco boat of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Three in the Philippines. In March 1942 it carried senior officers from Corregidor to Mindanao during the evacuation of General MacArthur, and on the night of 8 April 1942, under Lieutenant Robert B. Kelly, it attacked the Japanese cruiser Kuma off Cebu. The next day Japanese floatplanes caught it, and the crew beached and lost the boat.
The painting is attributed to Peter Helck (1893 to 1988), the New York illustrator best known for his paintings of early motor racing. The original was printed at about 40 by 28½ inches.
