Description
The Couldn’t Have Done It Without You poster
Couldn’t Have Done It Without You! was painted by Howard Scott and issued by the Navy Department’s Industrial Incentive Division in 1943. It was not a recruiting poster. It was made for the shipyards and war plants, to thank the men and women building the fleet and to keep production up. A sailor in a white cap grins straight out of the poster with his thumb raised, and behind him a crewman with a paint pot adds another rising-sun flag to the row of kills on the side of a big gun turret.
The speech bubble carries the thanks, and the lettering below carries the message: Full speed ahead… We’ve still got a big job to do! The original was printed at 40 by 28½ inches by the Government Printing Office and listed in its November 1943 catalogue. The Australian National Maritime Museum holds a copy.
Howard Scott (1902 to 1983) was a New York billboard and magazine artist, known for his posters for Heinz and Campbell’s Soup and for thirteen Saturday Evening Post covers painted between 1941 and 1945. He served in the Navy during the war and drew posters for it.
