Description
The Let’s Hit ’Em With Everything We’ve Got poster
McClelland Barclay painted this U.S. Navy recruiting poster in 1942. A sailor in a steel helmet and blue dungarees leans into the handwheel of an anti-aircraft gun, his eyes fixed on the sky, while tracer streaks overhead and a shipmate passes up ammunition behind him. Across the bottom runs the Navy’s call to young men in the first year of the war: Don’t wait, choose the Navy.
Barclay was one of America’s best-known illustrators, famous for the “Fisher Body Girl” car advertisements, and an officer in the Naval Reserve, assigned to the Navy’s recruiting office in New York. He signed this painting “McClelland Barclay USNR”. It was one of a run of action posters he painted for the Navy in 1942, alongside Dish it Out With the Navy. He was killed in action in the Solomon Islands in July 1943.
