Description
The Verdun, Road to Y.M.C.A. Canteen poster
“Verdun, Road to Y.M.C.A. Canteen” is a First World War poster issued by the Young Men’s Christian Association. A heavy stone gateway, battered by shellfire, frames a street of ruined buildings where mounted soldiers, a motorcycle and men on foot make their way toward a YMCA canteen. The drawing is signed with the initials A.K.S. and marked “sketched on spot by Y.M.C.A. secy”, and the poster was printed by Coquemer of Paris.
The Library of Congress dates it to 1917, the year after the great battle that made Verdun a byword for endurance. It is a rare and atmospheric piece of Great War history for a study, library or den.

Restored edition
Restored from a Library of Congress scan of an original print. Stains, fading and paper wear were repaired and the ochre and black drawing brought back to full strength, keeping the artist’s line and the red-triangle emblems true to the original.
