Description
The War Bonds poster
War Bonds, To Have and to Hold! was issued by the War Finance Division of the U.S. Treasury in 1944 as an official Treasury poster, number WFD-891, printed by the Government Printing Office. A soldier in a torn, sweat-stained shirt grips the pole of an enormous Stars and Stripes, his arm making a strong diagonal across a stormy sky.
The slogan borrows the words of the marriage vow, “to have and to hold”, and turns them into a pledge to the nation: what the soldier holds, the people at home must help him keep. The Treasury used the same line on another 1944 poster showing a young child.
The Brigham Young University Museum of Art credits the painting to Vic Guinnell.
