Description
The Ready poster
Ready, Join U.S. Marines, Land Sea Air was painted by Haddon Sundblom in 1942. A Marine sergeant in dress blues and a white cover stands squarely, hands on hips, looking straight at the viewer; his chevrons, ribbons and marksmanship badge are painted with the polish of a magazine advertisement. Behind his head runs the word Ready in giant red capitals, and the words U.S. Marines slant across his tunic in blue.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History holds a copy measuring 40 by 28 inches.
Sundblom (1899 to 1976) is best known for the Coca-Cola Santa Claus he painted from 1931, which shaped the modern image of Santa.
