Description
The Americans All poster
Americans All, Let’s Fight for Victory was painted by Leon Helguera for the Office of War Information in 1943 and issued as OWI Poster No. 65. Two arms reach up into a sunburst sky, each raising a hat: an embroidered charro sombrero on a brown sleeve trimmed with cream braid, and Uncle Sam’s white hat on a sleeve of stars and stripes. The message is printed in Spanish and English: Americanos todos, luchamos por la victoria. Americans all, let’s fight for victory.
The poster was made for Mexican Americans and Spanish-speaking communities across the Southwest, part of a wartime campaign to welcome them as full partners in the war effort at a time of tension at home. Helguera, born in Mexico in 1899 and an American citizen, also drew the famous I’m Counting on You! Uncle Sam and designed U.S. postage stamps.
