Description
The Dish it Out With the Navy poster
Dish it Out With the Navy was painted by McClelland Barclay and issued by the Navy Recruiting Bureau in September 1942, nine months after Pearl Harbor. A gun crew works a heavy deck gun in the middle of action: one sailor, stripped to the waist, swings a brass-cased shell toward the breech while a shipmate waves him in and the barrel behind them blazes. The slogan beneath urged young men to choose the Navy while they still had the choice: Choose now, while you can. Go to your nearest Navy recruiting station today.
Barclay was one of America’s best-known illustrators, famous for the “Fisher Body Girl” car advertisements, and an officer in the Naval Reserve. He signed this poster “McClelland Barclay USNR”. He was killed in action in the Solomon Islands in July 1943, when the landing ship he was sailing aboard as a combat artist was torpedoed.

Restored edition
Restored from a scan of an original 1942 print. The paint was cleaned and the colour brought back, with creases, stains and wear removed. Barclay’s signature is kept. Please note that the lettering has been re-set rather than retouched from the original: the words are the same, but the typefaces are close modern matches with a light shadow, and the small printer’s codes in the bottom margin have been left off.
