Description
The She’s a WOW poster
“The Girl He Left Behind” Is Still Behind Him, She’s a WOW was painted by Adolph Treidler and issued in 1943 by the Ordnance Department of the War Department, printed by the Government Printing Office. A young woman in a red and white polka-dot bandana holds a wrench beside a machine gun, and behind her, in shades of blue, a soldier charges with his rifle. WOW stood for Woman Ordnance Worker.
About 85,000 women worked directly for the Army’s Ordnance Department, making shells, bombs and guns and running cranes and milling machines. They wore bandannas made to an Army pattern so they could be identified on the job. The title turns the old song line “the girl I left behind me” around: she is not waiting at home, she is his supply line.
Treidler (1886 to 1981) was a leading magazine illustrator and travel-poster artist who had also drawn women munitions workers in the First World War.
