Description

The Give ’Em Both Barrels poster

Give ’Em Both Barrels was designed by the French poster artist Jean Carlu for the Division of Information of the Office for Emergency Management in Washington, and printed by the Government Printing Office in 1941. A worker with a riveting gun and a soldier behind a machine gun are drawn as one shape, their two barrels pointing the same way: production at home and firepower at the front, fighting together.

Carlu was one of the great French modernists. He lost his right arm in an accident at eighteen, moved from architecture to graphic design, and came to the United States for the 1939 New York World’s Fair. When France fell in 1940 he stayed, and his posters for the American defence effort, including America’s Answer! Production, became landmarks of wartime design.
