Description
The Navy Heritage recruiting poster
“Heritage” is a U.S. Navy recruiting poster painted in 1959 by Lou Nolan, a World War II Navy veteran who went on to create recruiting art for the Navy for decades. A petty officer in dress blues stands on a pier holding a young boy’s hand as they look out at USS Constitution, “Old Ironsides”, the oldest commissioned warship afloat. One image carries the whole idea: the Navy’s past handed down to the next generation.
The design was reprinted by the U.S. Government Printing Office well into the 1970s and became one of the best-known Navy recruiting posters of the Cold War era. It makes a meaningful gift for a Navy veteran, a sailor’s family or anyone who loves tall ships and naval history.
