A harvest with a public purpose
Your Victory Garden Counts More Than Ever asks viewers to see a vegetable plot as part of the wider war effort. The Australian War Memorial attributes the design to Hubert Morley and records a 1945 War Food Administration publishing imprint. Its catalogue explains the connection between civilian gardens, rationing and food supply.
The image makes its argument through abundance: recognisable vegetables give the appeal a tangible result. Unlike a recruiting poster, it offers a task that could be undertaken at home. The word “your” makes a national problem feel local and achievable.
How the poster communicates
The large heading is followed by a more conversational line, then the colourful produce. That sequence carries the viewer from instruction to reward. The phrase “more than ever” also discourages people from treating previous effort as sufficient.
This is a home-front poster with a domestic subject, but it is not simply a decorative gardening advertisement. Its issuer and wartime context connect growing food with collective responsibility. Displayed beside industrial or bond posters, it broadens the story of service beyond uniforms, factories and the battlefield.
