Description
The Build for Your Navy poster
Build for Your Navy! Enlist! was made by Robert Muchley for the Works Projects Administration poster program, for the U.S. Navy’s Bureau of Yards and Docks. Two sailors in white caps and work gloves bolt a bright orange steel girder together; behind them palm-fringed islands and warships sit on a blue sea. In the corner is the Seabee badge, a fighting bee armed with tools and a gun.
The Navy formed its Construction Battalions, the CBs or Seabees, in early 1942 to build bases, airfields and harbours across the Pacific, and recruited skilled tradesmen to fill them: Carpenters, machinists, electricians etc. The Library of Congress holds a copy among its WPA posters.

Restored from an original print: the paper and colours cleaned, and creases, stains and wear removed, with the lettering, the Seabee badge, Muchley’s signature and the WPA mark kept. We don’t have a usable scan of the print before restoration, so there is no before and after slider.
