Description
Dish It Out With the Navy! in red
McClelland Barclay’s painting of a Navy gun crew in action was issued in 1942 in more than one poster layout. This version sets the painting inside a white border on a deep blue field. “Dish it out with the Navy!” runs across the top in red script and capitals, “Choose now while you can” sits beneath in white, and the Navy’s fouled-anchor emblem and a red, white and blue band carry the line Go to your nearest Navy recruiting station today.
The painting is the same in both versions: a sailor stripped to the waist swings a brass-cased shell toward the breech while a shipmate in a white cap waves him in. Barclay, the illustrator famous for the “Fisher Body Girl”, was a Naval Reserve officer and signed it “McClelland Barclay USNR”. He was killed in action in the Solomon Islands in July 1943.
Compare it with the blue-band version with white lettering, and read about the two versions.
Restored edition
Restored from an original 1942 print: the paint and paper cleaned, the colour brought back, and creases, stains and wear removed, with the lettering and Barclay’s signature kept. We don’t have a usable scan of the print before restoration for this version, so there is no before and after slider.
