Restored 1942 Setting the Course to Victory U.S. Coast Guard recruiting poster

The Library of Congress catalogues the work as Setting the course to victory with the U.S. Coast Guard, created in 1942 by L. W. Bentley, U.S.C.C.R. Its summary describes two Coast Guardsmen on a ship, and its subjects identify Coast Guard recruiting and enlistment during the Second World War.

The archival record

The record carries reproduction number LC-USZC4-2513 and call number POS – WWII – US .J26 (C size). Its rights advisory states that there are no known restrictions on publication. The catalogue also explains that its digitised image was made from a colour film copy transparency rather than necessarily from a direct modern scan of the paper original.

Why restoration matters

A reproduction prepared from an older transparency or derivative scan may carry fading, colour casts, dust, edge damage and limited local contrast. The restoration process aims to recover legibility and tonal balance without erasing the lithographic character that makes the image historically recognisable.
