Normandy 1944: From the June Landings to the July Breakout

A guide to the important distinction between D-Day in June and Operation Cobra in July.

Military artwork listed as Breakout at Normandy showing fighting in the Normandy campaign

June and July describe different stages

The Displate listing calls this image Breakout at Normandy, June 1944. That title needs context: the Allied landings began on 6 June, but the U.S. offensive commonly associated with the Normandy breakout, Operation Cobra, began on 25 July 1944. The U.S. Army’s account makes that sequence clear.

Between the landings and the breakout, Allied forces fought to expand their position in Normandy. A general battle scene cannot, by itself, establish the exact day, unit or operation being depicted.

How to read this edition

We retain the listing title when identifying the metal edition, while using the broader Normandy campaign to explain its historical setting. We do not describe Operation Cobra as a June operation. The artist, original commission and precise action represented by this image remain unconfirmed.

This distinction is useful for anyone building a D-Day or Normandy artwork collection. A landing scene, a hedgerow battle and a breakout image may belong to the same campaign but tell different stories. Dates and source captions help keep those stories separate rather than compressing the entire campaign into a single day.
