Historic posters, restored with care.
How American Military Posters researches, restores and prints historic American military posters.
American Military Posters restores historic American military and wartime posters and prints them as fine-art paper and framed prints. Each poster is researched, carefully restored from an archival scan, and printed to order in the United States.
Why we do this
Between 1917 and the 1960s, America’s best illustrators, among them James Montgomery Flagg, J. C. Leyendecker, John Falter and Stevan Dohanos, painted posters that called people to enlist, work, save and stand together. Most surviving copies are faded, folded and stained, and many reproductions online are low-resolution copies with no history attached. We want these posters to be seen as their artists intended, and to come with the story of why they were made.
Where our images come from
We start from the best scans held by public institutions such as the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, the National Archives and museum collections. For every poster we record the archive, the catalogue number, the artist, the date and the basis on which it can be reproduced. You will find the sources listed at the end of each poster’s history in our Poster Journal. Read more about rights and provenance.
Restored, not reinvented
Restoration removes the damage of eighty or a hundred years: stains, fold lines, tears, fading and yellowed paper. It does not redraw the artwork. Lettering, composition and the texture of the original lithograph are kept, and we do not add details that were not on the original. Where we have a matching archival scan, the product page has a before and after slider so you can compare the two yourself. See how we restore a poster.
